Two-factor authentication (2FA)

How to turn two-factor authentication (2FA) on and off, and what to do if you lose access to your Authenticator app or backup codes.

Written by Damian

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security when you sign in to your LocalZen account. In addition to your password, you enter a one-time code from an Authenticator app every time you sign in. This means that someone who learns your password still can't sign in to your account without access to your phone.

How 2FA works

The one-time code is generated by an Authenticator app (e.g. Google Authenticator) installed on your phone. You connect the app to your LocalZen account once by scanning a QR code. From then on, the app generates changing codes that can only be viewed on your device. Signing in therefore requires two independent factors: something you know (your password) and something you have (your phone with the app).

Why you should turn on 2FA

A password alone can be stolen, for example through a data breach, phishing, or a weak or reused password. With 2FA, a password alone isn't enough to take over your account. This matters especially if your account has access to many business profiles.

How to turn on 2FA

  1. Go to User account → Security.

  2. Click Enable 2FA.

  3. Confirm your current LocalZen password.

  4. Scan the QR code shown on screen with your Authenticator app to connect it to your account. You can get the Authenticator app from Google Play or the App Store.

  5. Enter the code generated by the app to confirm the connection.

  6. Save the backup codes shown on screen in a safe place.

Once you complete these steps, the status changes to "2FA enabled". From then on, every time you sign in, you'll enter a code from your Authenticator app in addition to your password.

Backup codes and losing access

When you turn on 2FA, you get 10 backup codes. Each code can be used only once. You can use them to sign in or to turn off 2FA if you lose access to your Authenticator app (e.g. when you change phones). Store them somewhere other than the phone with the Authenticator app.

Turning off 2FA invalidates all remaining backup codes, so it's a good idea to turn 2FA back on right away and connect the app on your new phone.

If you lose access to your Authenticator app but still have your backup codes, sign in to LocalZen with a backup code and then turn off 2FA. Instead of entering a code from the app, use the "Use a backup code" option.

If you lose access to both your Authenticator app and your backup codes, contact our support team at [email protected].

How to turn off 2FA

  1. Go to User account → Security.

  2. Click Disable 2FA.

  3. Confirm your current password and enter a code from your Authenticator app (or click "Use a backup code" if you don't have access to the app).

  4. Click Disable 2FA.

All your existing backup codes will then be invalidated.
